What is Neurology?

Neurology is the practice of medicine that focuses on the health of your brain, spinal cord, and nerves, which collectively are referred to as the nervous system.  As your body’s communication and processing center, the nervous system is very important to your health and who you are.  It lets you think, feel, control your body, and communicate.  When a problem arises with your nervous system, you may have trouble moving, talking, feeling, reading, thinking, and doing things you normally do.  A neurologist is a doctor specially trained to diagnose and treat problems with the nervous system.  Neurologists treat patients with such neurological illnesses as stroke, movement disorders (Parkinson's disease), dementia and memory problems (Alzheimer's disease), sleep disorders, multiple sclerosis, brain tumors, neuromuscular and peripheral nerve disorders, headache, women's neurological problems, epilepsy, and others.

NorthShore University HealthSystem (NorthShore) Department of Neurology

Nicholas A. Vick, M.D., brain tumor specialist, listens to a patient and presents the best treatment options for that patient.

The Department of Neurology at NorthShore University HealthSystem has been in operation since 1977, treating tens of thousands of patients with disorders of the nervous system.  The department has grown from a division of medicine to a thriving department with over ten subspecialties servicing all three hospitals in our organization.  Thomas P. Bleck, M.D., Ruggles Chairman of Neurology, has been leading the department through a period of continued growth and improvement.  The main purpose of the department is to provide excellent medical care to patients with neurological illnesses.  In addition, the department devotes significant resources to support basic and clinical research into understanding the root causes and improving the treatment of neurological diseases.  The final purpose of the department is education.  All doctors serve on the faculty of Northwestern University Medical School, and regularly teach and supervise medical students, residents, and fellows.  The Neurology Department at NorthShore collaborates closely with The Division of Neurosurgery for surgical treatment of neurological diseases.

Today, the Evanston, Glenbrook, and Highland Park Hospitals have over twenty neurologists that are trained to diagnose and treat a wide variety of neurological illnesses.  They manage patients with general neurological problems, and all of the doctors have special interest and training in one or more areas within neurology.  The department has programs and specialists for brain tumors, multiple sclerosis, movement disorders, stroke, sleep disorders, ageing and dementia, women’s neurology, peripheral nerve disorders, neuromuscular diseases, and epilepsy.
