Women's Pathology Fellowship

This one-year fellowship located at Evanston Hospital, Evanston, Illinois, is designed to develop diagnostic expertise in Women's Pathology including Breast, Gynecologic and Perinatal Pathology in academic or community settings.  We accept one fellow each year to this independent post-graduate program sponsored by the University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine.

Core rotations

Breast pathology (4 months), to include neoplastic and non-neoplastic surgical pathology, frozen section, and consultations.
Gynecologic pathology (4 months), to include neoplastic and non-neoplastic surgical pathology, frozen section, and consultations.
Perinatal pathology (2 months), to include the routine examination of placentas and products of conception. The fellow also has the option to participate in the perinatal autopsy service if they desire more focused training in this area.
Elective time/dedicated research time (2 months)

Fellow responsibilities include supervision and teaching of residents in dissection of Women's Pathology surgical specimens as needed, performing a complete microscopic review and dictation of in-house Women's Pathology cases, intraoperative consultations (frozen section), workup of outside consultation cases, and presentations at departmental and interdepartmental conferences, including subspecialty tumor boards.

Research opportunities

The scientific environment and faculty expertise in our department is particularly well-suited for translational research. The fellow would be expected to participate in at least one research project under the guidance of a faculty mentor in either gynecologic, breast or perinatal pathology. The project would ideally be identified in the first 3 months and run longitudinally throughout the fellowship. Elective time can also be used as dedicated months for research to work on this and other research projects.

Applicants must hold an MD or DO degree (or foreign equivalent with ECFMG certification) and be board eligible or certified in Anatomic Pathology or combined AP/CP.  Applicants must be eligible for an Illinois medical license.

Stipends are commensurate with the fellow's level of training.
